Residence in Mytikas

This architectural project is a collaboration with KM Engineers, for a single-family vacation house in Mytikas, Greece. This particular plot has unique features, as it has limited width of only 5,20m and it connects two streets.

The principal idea was to create a shell, in which the house will be embedded, in order to maintain privacy. The ground floor houses the kitchen and the living room, along with a guest bedroom and a bathroom. While the first floor houses the master bedroom, which extends in a protected terrace.

The house tends to be introvert and that is why all openings have various levels of privacy. The terraces are conceived as negative volumes carved into the solid mass, with some openings featuring additional filtering elements. All those elements are marked with terracotta material, either in tiles or in sunbreaks. Terracotta is a color and a material broadly used in the Ionian vernacular architecture and that is why we choose to include it in this project which is only a few meters away from the Ionian Sea.

Taking advantage of the village's urban planning, based on which the plot next door is unlikely to be built, we created a pattern of glass bricks on the long side of the building. We chose the wavy glass pattern hoping to create a unique lighting experience along the staircase- a bit of an underwater experience.
